The civic body has been visiting hotels, lodges and restaurants in the city to check if there are any irregularities.
After the Kamla Mills tragedy last month, special teams of eight wards surveyed around 275 hotels, restaurants, and lodges in only one week.
Every team was included a ward officer, a junior engineer, a fire officer and a sanitary inspector. Each team checked the hotels in the city for any kind of violations
The team comprising concerned ward officer, a junior engineer, fire officer and sanitary inspector are visiting hotels in the city to check for violations such as non-renewal of licenses, making unauthorised alterations and extensions to the structure, failure to adhere to the fire safety norms.
Over the last one week, the teams have served notices to 97 hotels for various illegal constructions. As many as 40 hotels such as Little Italy, Viscous Circle and Sunday, Barbecue Nation and Tight among others faced action from the civic demolition squads.
“Violations of any form be it encroachment or fire safety related will be served with appropriate notices. In case of encroachment, a 30-day notice is issued. The offending establishment has to either remove the encroachment on their own or face action from NMMC,”said Vashi ward officer Mahendra Singh Thoke.
Hotels which were already served notices in the past for encroachments faced action with immediate effect.
These hotels were found to have extended their area by putting up rain sheds, and in some cases, constructing additional kitchen areas.
Paying attention to fire safety norms, the team informed that the presence of exit and entry doors, ventilation, fire extinguisher kits, kitchens with chimney and exhaust facilities are a must.
“All eight fire officers are involved in the survey process. A comprehensive detail on the violations from fire safety point of view is awaited for the department to initiate action such as issuing show cause notices for closing down the establishments” said the NMMC chief fire officer, Prabhakar Gadhe.
The safety survey is still underway in many of the wards. “We finished surveying each of the hotels in our ward by Tuesday and paid visits to over 60-odd hotels. Two demolition drives were initiated last week against Barbecue Nation’s unauthorized shed and kitchen and another small hotel in the node,” said Nerul ward office Sanjay Tayade.
Belapur ward officials informed that they have surveyed 55 hotels out of which 32 were found to be have violated various norms such as encroaching upon marginal space and constructing mezzanine floors. “The various violations are being scrutinized for taking proper action. The remaining hotels in the ward will also be checked,” said the Belapur ward officer Shashikant Tandel.
