When you decided to move bag and baggage to Navi Mumbai, did you ever imagine that the travel to Mumbai city will get as easy as a boat ride? The answer is most likely no. However, that is a fact. Plus, there is more, it won’t be just any boat ride, it’ll be an AC boat ride!
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced that residents of Navi Mumbai will soon be able to travel to South Mumbai in AC boats from June, starting from Vashi and Belapur. Running twice a day, these boats will ferry passengers all the way to Gateway of India and Bhaucha Dhakka in SoBo.
While the schedule of the service hasn’t been decided yet, it is certain that each boat has a carrying capacity of 60 passengers. Ramaswamy N, the municipal commissioner of NMMC, is yet to inspect the jetties that they will use for these services. He says, “After the ongoing Swachh Survekshan survey, I will personally visit the jetties and collect all the relevant reports. If everything goes according to plan, the boat services will be available from the first week of June.”
One of the best in the recent times of Navi Mumbai news, Ramaswamy seems optimistic about the future of the boat services. He notes, “A huge number of people commute to South Mumbai from the satellite city every day. Travelling by AC boats will be less time-consuming than trains.”
For the AC boats travel, it has been realized that some jetties developed by City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) will be used. According to Ramaswamy, each boat is estimated to cost around 2-3 Crores. The NMMC has set aside a 10 Crore budget for this project. While this Navi Mumbai news is a good one, Kaushik Joshi, 45, an activist from Belapur says, “Two boats won’t be sufficient. The civic body should expand the services after the initial months.”
