Consumers face Tuesday’s APMC strike

All of 36 unions of head-loader workers stirred a commotion due to a strike which was followed by them shutting of all the APMC shops in Maharashtra. This happened against the government’s notification of derecognizing all unions and suggesting to bring all them under a single umbrella along with the issues faced by them related to recruitment of staff.

Because of the strike, the supply and distribution chain in all five markets in Vashi APMC (onion-potato, spices, vegetables, grains, and fruits) were adversely affected. This was also the reason why there were no transactions carried out. Over 1lakh head-loaders took part in the strike across Maharashtra.

Due to the negative effect on the supply and distribution chain, the prices of vegetables went up by 10% and 15% in the retail market on Tuesday. According to traders, the prices are likely to crash on Wednesday when markets are open for business.

According to MLC Narendra Patil, Mathadi leader, “The day-long protest remained successful in all market yards across the state. We will have a discussion soon seeking not to pursue the merging of all unions.”
