Friday morning turned out to be unfortunate for some commuters, who were at the foot-over bridge that connects Elphinstone railway station with Parel suburban railway station. The stampede left at least 22 dead and injured over 32 people. Among the deceased, 4 were women and 18 men. But the number of causalities grew since the news broke.
The incident is reportedly believed to have occurred between 10:30 am to 11. 00 am, due to a fear of heavy rain, which led to the falling of concrete chunks followed by the collapse of a pedestrian overpass, that triggered the chaos. Ruckus prevailed as commuters rushed to leave the bridge.
According to a Railway Officer, “The rains in the morning had caused a large number of people to gather on the foot overbridge at Elphinstone Road. At around 10:50 a.m., a part of the tin roof of the FOB collapsed, causing panic among the people.”
Relief and medical assistance immediately sprang into action. While senior railway officials reached the spot to monitor the relief work. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is also expected to arrive at the scene by 1:15 pm. The office-goers and commuters who got injured have been admitted to KEM hospital. Although, the names of the deceased have not been disclosed yet.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik released a statement saying, “inquiry should be instituted immediately and action must be taken against those responsible for this tragedy.” He also added that the government should disburse a compensation of 10 lakhs to the family of deceased and 1 lakh to the injured.
As per earlier reports, there were calls for the immediate repair work of the narrow bridge, which was not strong enough to bare huge crowd. But, all went in vain!
