International day of the girl child: 7 Bollywood celebrities who adopted girls

Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man.” ― Rabindranath Tagore

Though we live in a ‘progressive’ society but to some extent the old traditions and belief that ‘Girls are weak or girls are a liability’, don’t tend to leave us. Girls are more often judged on their appearance and lifestyle. It is a sad reality of a country we live in. We don’t deny the fact that guys have their turn areas too but women always take the crown. Even when it comes to adoption, many couples or single men/women prefer a male child. There are several people who have set an example to the society by adopting a girl child and giving her a life she truly deserves. Women like Sushmita Sen and Raveena Tandon became a single mom in their twenties. On the occasion of International Day Girl Child, we bring to you a list of Bollywood celebrities who adopted girls and have encouraged other parents to do so.

Sunny Leone

The latest to join the club is Indo-Candian actress Sunny Leone and her husband Daniel Weber in July 2017. The 21-month-old baby girl from Latur is named Nisha Kaur Weber. The actress earlier hinted at adoption but no one took her seriously. She was quoted saying that she might walk in with a baby in hand and everyone will be shocked, where did the baby come from. When the reports of her adoption came out, social media got reasons to slam her first for her history as a porn star and then for the colour of Nisha. But she stayed firm and did not let the sledging get to her and now the family of three looks very happy and tight-knit.

Preity Zinta
Bubbly actress Preity Zinta gave herself a beautiful gift on her 34th birthday – she adopted 34 girls from the Mother Miracle School in Hrishikesh. The actress is associated with UN Aids Goodwill Ambassador which works against the transmission of HIV/Aids from mother to child. She took the entire responsibility of the girls by taking care of their food, clothing, shelter and education expenses.

Sushmita Sen
In 2000, the former Miss Universe made headlines when she decided to adopt a girl child at the age of 25. She fought a long legal battle and Bombay High Court nullified the appeal and finally, she adopted Renee. In 2009, she adopted her second daughter Alisah.

Raveena Tandon
Raveena was just 21 when she adopted two girls – Chhaya (8) and Pooja (11) in 1995 and became a single mother in the prime of her career. She married Anil Thadani in 2004 and the couple is blessed with two kids – Rasha and Ranbir. In 2014, Raveena became a grandmother after Pooja gave birth to a baby and Chaaya got married in January 2016 in Goa.

Mithun Chakraborty

Mithun’s tale of adoption sounds like a Bollywood script. He adopted a girl found lying in the garbage bin and named her Ishani. She was raised along with Mithun’s three sons – Mahaakshay (Mimoh), Ushmey, and Namashi. Dishani has always stayed away from the limelight but it seems she plans to follow her daddy dearest footsteps. She is said to be pursuing an acting course in New York Film Academy.

Sameer Soni and Neelam Kothari

Neelam and Sameer tied the knot in January 2011 and two years after their marriage adopted a baby girl Ahana. In an interview when asked the actress-turned-jewellery designer on adopting a baby girl, she said, “Samir doesn’t have a sister, his is an all-boys family. I feel girls are best for their parents.”

Salim Khan

Once when Salim Khan was on his morning walk he came across a toddler crying on the footpaths, whose mother happened to die owing to some accident. Salim brought her home, adopted her and raised her along with her four children – Salman, Sohail, Arbaaz, and Alvira. Arpita married Aayush Sharma in 2014 in a princess like a wedding, she always wished for.
