A 27-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on grounds of allegedly robbing a woman of her belongings and then pushing her off the running train on December 3, when she was travelling in the ladies compartment of a local train in Navi Mumbai.
According to a senior police official, Santosh Bhikaji Kekan was held by the police from a hotel in Shilphata, Kalyan. Kekan is a resident of village named Mharal in Shahad tehsil located nearby Thane district. He fled from his house at Mharal village.
As per the statement of the victim, a man boarded the south Mumbai-bound local train and got in the same ladies compartment where she was present all alone on the night of December 3 around 11:50 pm and robbed her of her purse, earrings, and 2 mobile phones.
When she tried to fightback, he pushed her off the running train near Juinagar station in Navi Mumbai. She fell on railway tracks and sustained injuries, while the man escaped.
Police took the help of CCTV footage to zero in on the identity of the culprit. The CCTV footage showed the man alighting from a car near Mansarovar railway station on the night of the incident. Police reached him by tracing the owner of the car.
