Navi Mumbai: A 21-year-old man was arrested by the Kopar Khairne police for allegedly assaulting an on-duty traffic constable on Monday. According to the information provided by the police, Danish Shaikh, a resident of sector 19 parked his two-wheeler on the road and he was talking to one of his friend who stays in the nearby sector.
Tanaji Patil, the traffic constable reached the place and asked Shaikh to move away his vehicle from the road as it was a hindrance for other vehicles to pass through the path.
After giving the instruction, Shaikh refused to move his vehicle which was parked on the road and the two got into an argument. Patil claimed when he asked Sheikh to move the vehicle which was parked on the road to allow traffic to flow smoothly but Sheikh became aggressive and got into an argument. He refused to move his vehicle and allegedly slapped the 45-year-old traffic constable.
In a video shot by a bystander, Sheikh is seen slapping Patil after which others intervened. He was arrested after Patil filed an FIR under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of IPC on Tuesday and is currently in police custody.
“It is a crime to assault a policeman in uniform. If the video shows the constable abusing Shaikh, he should have complained to the traffic police, instead of slapping him. If the constable had used abusive words, then we would have initiated a departmental inquiry,” said DCP (traffic) Nitin Patil.
