To improve road safety, Navi Mumbai went on a special 10-day drive for where traffic cops caught a whopping 2,462 offenders. Majority of them were charged with three major traffic offenses. Even people boating fancy number plates have been caught.
Not only did they catch this over 2,000 offenders but also recovered a compensation of a hefty amount of Rs.8.03 lakh. The money was derived from the penalties and fines charged on the offenders.
“The majority 1,414 cases were registered for helmetless bike-riding and a collective compounding penalty of Rs. 5.82 lakh has been recovered from them. For helmetless bike riding, the penalty amount is Rs. 500 as per the MV Act section 129/177 ” said DCP(traffic) Nitin Pawar.
The fancy number plates and black films registered were 594 and 446 respectively. The penalty price for black films is Rs.200 under MV Act Section 100/177. From then onwards, black films were peeled off by the traffic cops.
Vehicles with fancy registration plate have charged with a penalty of Rs.200, and as those plate with fancy fonts, they have been charged with a penalty of Rs. 1000.
According to the data collected by the traffic cops on the 10-day drive, 556 cases of helmetless riding was registered only within Vashi, followed by Turbhe with 146 cases.
Pawar said, “The offenders who were unable to pay the penalty on the spot had to deposit their driving license with the traffic cop for which a receipt is provided. They can collect the same from the concerned traffic unit by showing the receipt after paying the cash penalty.”
