Thursday started off with a pleasant morning for Navi Mumbaikars, as people woke up to a notable event at Nerul’s Ganpatrao Tandel ground. Primped up by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), the playground echoed with the cheering and chirping of students participating in the civic walkathon.
About 40,000 pupils, teachers, and civic staff gathered to take part in the walkathon and football carnival ahead of FIFA Under-17 World Cup premiere event on October 5, 2017. Prior arrangements of refreshment were already made, by erecting several tents and kiosks.
As many as 112 private and civic schools, along with junior colleges from NMMC area confirmed their participation. This time, the city aimed to break its own national record of the largest human chain consisting of 27,000 participants in the walkathon held in the year 2015.
If you are wondering about the objective of this mass participation, it is to promote football as a sport and Swachh Navi Mumbai.
“We have applied for an entry in the Limca Book of Records in the category of largest football carnival and walkathon for Swachh Bharat,” stated deputy municipal commissioner Amrish Patnigere.
