Navi Mumbai markets turns Christmassy red with the sale of poinsettia plants.

Traditionally, the arrival of poinsettias marks the beginning of winter. The sale of cherry red trees seems to be doing really well in Navi Mumbai despite the probable dampening of crops due to last week’s unseasonal rains.

Commonly, these are available in red, but other variants of these trees are also being developed now, which includes white, dark pink, and pale. These trees certainly make for a rare kind of purchase because of its unusual colour coupled with an attribute of double petals. Don’t expect to buy it with a cheap price tag, but its flowers remain fresh till the new year.

Denoting the arrival of Christmas, florists take care of the poinsettia plant so nicely, that it leads them to bloom during this time every year. Moreover, they start blooming and grow taller during time of the year.  Since they get spoilt during heavy rains, therefore, they must be looked after with a lot of caution.

Even though, there are new colours available in the market, sellers still encourage people to buy the traditional red ones. Generally, these plants are grown in the farms of Nashik, Pune, Alibaug and Bangalore. Unlike X-mas trees, which are available in the market throughout the year, poinsettia plants are only sold during Christmas winters. They are preferably planted in the ground for a better growth.

On one hand, the smaller varieties are sold at Rs 200 and above, on the other hand, the larger plants costs around Rs 500.

According to a seller, the dead leaves and flowers are clipped from the trees and manures are added to the plant from time-to-time. He also added that these plants need to be taken care of throughout the year, as people usually buy it during the festive season, but don’t bother about it afterwards. These plants can be kept indoors during rainy season and does not require frequent watering.
