Striking a proper balance in our environment is very important, and to establish this, only we humans are able. Even to this day, the safety and well-being of animals to some extent is neglected. Many of the activities that we do are some of the major reasons why other species are still in danger, some to a point of extinction.
However, amidst all this, there are strong initiatives taken like the one taken by the Panvel range forest officials to improve the well-being of animals and the wildlife that deserves to be lauded.
Near Pandavkada waterfalls, on top of the Kharghar hills, the Panvel range forest officials have built a water enclosure(bund) that is meant to store water during the monsoon season which will help meet water requirements for animals and birds.
Panvel range forest officer D Sonawane said, “We recently created the bund on Kharghar hills so that the birds and forest animals do not suffer from dehydration.’’
Raghunath Jadhav, a Kharghar-based animal activist assisted the forest officials in setting up the water bund. He said, “In the coming monsoon season, we should hopefully be able to store enough water here so that it lasts for the next seven to eight months. This is a good endeavor which will help the forest fauna.’’
In the meantime, forest personnel at Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Panvel taluka are planning to get water tankers to full up many water holes in forests to help animals and birds to get easy access to water.
“During the summer, almost all the streams and ponds dry up in the forests. Hence, water tankers have to be hired to fill them up. I myself am planning to give away small earthen water pots which can be hung from branches so that the birds and other animals living on trees inside the sanctuary are benefitted,’’ said activist Vishnu Gavali.
Last year, Navi Mumbai witnesses many serious cases of a forest fire. Many residents expressed their disappointment as the flora and fauna were getting adversely affected. Hence it is highly necessary to make arrangements for storing water for the survival and safety of the animals and birds of the wildlife.
