A sambar died after being run over by an unidentified vehicle on Mumbai-Pune Expressway around 6 am on Sunday. The accident took place on the Pune carriageway between Dattawadi in Raigad district and Dasturi in Pune.
A post-mortem confirmed it to be an accidental death case after which the carcass was burnt. Forest officer for Khalapur range, Ashish Patil, said that sambars usually came in herds in search of water.
“This male sambar possibly strayed onto the expressway from Vadgaon Maval forest area. It was run over in Pune-bound lane,” Patil said.
He said they will write to the agencies concerned to fence off the forested area.
Gurunath Sathelkar, chairman of an NGO working to help accident victims, informed the authorities about the accident.
