Navi Mumbai: Thousands of Muslims took part in a grand Muharram procession in the city. The procession, taken out in memory of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussain who was martyred on this day, travelled through the streets of Turbhe, APMC, Vashi, Sion-Panvel Road, Vashi toll plaza on Sunday. It culminated at the Vashi creek where the tazia was immersed.
Turbhe Store is the only place in Navi Mumbai where tazia-making begins almost a month ahead of Muharram with as many as 20 rural artisans coming from Nairaini tehsil, Banda district of Uttar Pradesh for the last 26 years.
Tazia, a replica of the tomb of Hussain, is carried with great respect. “A symbolic al smaller tazia was taken out through the congested bylanes whereas the bigger one was stationed at Garib Nawaz Masjid. Both the tazias made their way for immersion in the Vashi creek,” said Ramzan Khan, a procession committee member.
