Residents were greeted with a waft of stench in the morning last week. The stink came from a leakage in an underground sewage line that is only couple of feet away from the control valve of a drinking water pipeline (yup, that’s your gag cue).
People who take to the 2 km long stretch between Nerul signal and Vazirani signal off Palm Beach road, for jogs and walks were piqued by the unbearable smell and complained about the issue to NMMC, but seems like no immediate action was taken to control the leakage despite the fact that officials visited the spot on Sunday. The leakage happened in front of a residential building, Sea Breeze Tower. Residents of sector 14,16 and 18 have been baring the stench for some time now.
“I ran from pillar to post to lodge the complaint about the pipe burst but in vain. Finally, I met deputy municipal commissioner Dadasaheb Chabukswar at an event on Sunday. He was driven to the spot and he assured that the repairing will be done in a day or two. However, the problem has not been attended yet,” said Milind Tondalkar, a local resident.
Chabukswar confirmed that he had visited the spot. “I instructed the concerned officials to take stock of the situation and fix the leakage. I will have to check why the issue has not been attended to,” he said.
“If this leakage was not enough, the nearby drainage chamber has remained open for many years now, indicating the level of civic apathy. We are appalled by the lax attitude of NMMC officials and the stench could affect the health of the locals,” said another resident Mohan Surve.
Not only residents but even gardeners who tend to the green stretches have been complaining of the stench.
