Quick answer: Indian citizens in the UK renew an Indian passport by confirming which Indian mission covers their address, completing the online application, booking an appointment and submitting the application through VFS Global. From 1 July 2026 the High Commission of India lists a government fee of £93 (excluding other charges) for an ordinary adult 36 page passport. VFS lists a minimum of 10 days for a normal application. Tatkal timing is shorter but depends on the mission and the application. If you have become a British citizen, you cannot renew and need to surrender the passport.
This is general information, not legal advice. Fees and procedures are set by the High Commission of India and the other missions, and they change from time to time, so check the High Commission website and VFS before you apply. This guide is independent and is not affiliated with any mission or VFS Global.
When renewal or re-issue is the right application
- Your passport is expiring, expired, full, damaged or lost, or its details have to change, and you are still an Indian citizen.
- If you have acquired British citizenship, renewal is not available. See the surrender note near the end of this guide.
Jurisdiction and appointment
Confirm the mission responsible for your residential address before completing the government form. Then choose an application centre authorised for that service and jurisdiction. Mission responsibility and the place where VFS accepts an application are different things.
- The High Commission’s consular jurisdiction page on the High Commission website lists the areas of each mission. Its current arrangements include Manchester, with coverage of the Greater Manchester boroughs, and Belfast for Northern Ireland, as well as London, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
- The VFS page lists the application centres and their services (see the VFS passport page). Centres change, so use the current list when you book and do not rely on an old directory.
Current fees
The High Commission published a fee schedule that applies from 1 July 2026. It lists these government fees, which exclude the Indian Community Welfare Fund charge, the VFS service charge and any delivery charge. They are not final checkout totals.
| Service | Fee listed by the High Commission |
|---|---|
| Adult ordinary passport, 36 pages | £93 |
| Adult jumbo passport, 60 pages | £130 |
| Adult ordinary passport under Tatkal | £185 |
| Adult jumbo passport under Tatkal | £222 |
| Minor passport, five years or until age 18 | £67 |
| Lost, damaged or stolen replacement, 36 pages | £185 |
| Lost, damaged or stolen replacement, 60 pages | £222 |
| Emergency Certificate | £12 |
| Surrender Certificate | £30 |
- The Tatkal amounts above are the listed totals for that service. Do not add a separate Tatkal supplement from an older table.
- The VFS page may still show older figures. Use the dated High Commission schedule as the government fee reference, and check the current service charge and any delivery charge on the booking and payment route you use.
- Payment methods at the centre are listed on the VFS page. Fees are not refundable.
Documents for a standard adult renewal
- The online application form, printed, and a prior appointment.
- Two identical recent colour photographs, 35 by 45 mm, with a plain white background, the face covering about 80 to 85 per cent of the photo, eyes open and mouth closed, and no glasses.
- Annexure E, and copies of the first and last pages of your passport. If your last passport was not issued in London, also a copy of your entry visa.
- Immigration status evidence. Include the evidence specified by your mission, including a self-attested copy of your UK eVisa and share code where applicable. Check the instructions for indefinite leave to remain or other status evidence, rather than relying only on an old BRP. See GOV.UK on how to view and prove your immigration status.
- Proof of your UK address, and one Indian address with police station and PIN code.
- The VFS declaration form. Take the originals for verification. They are returned except for the Indian passport.
A UK address is generally not printed in the passport. The exception is for indefinite leave to remain holders with no permanent Indian address, with an affidavit.
Application steps
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm the mission for your address and your category: adult or minor, ordinary, jumbo, Tatkal, or lost or damaged. |
| 2 | Complete the online application on the Passport Seva mission portal for the correct jurisdiction, and print it. |
| 3 | Book an appointment through the route your mission specifies, and register or pay through the applicable booking and payment route. |
| 4 | Assemble the documents, photographs and immigration status evidence. |
| 5 | Attend the appointment (see attendance below) and submit the package. |
| 6 | Collect or receive the new passport by post or courier, and check the details. |
| 7 | Update your UKVI account with the new passport details (see below). |
Attendance
Plan for the applicant to attend the appointment. The High Commission and the Birmingham Consulate say applicants, including minors, should attend for identification, although Birmingham’s child page contains an exception under its newborn section, and the VFS overview still mentions submission by a representative. These sources are not fully aligned. If you need a representative to submit, or you are applying for a child, confirm the attendance requirement for your mission and application category before booking. Do not assume that a family authorisation letter is sufficient.
Postal applications and applications through agents, travel agents or solicitors are not accepted on the VFS page. Handwritten forms have not been accepted since 1 October 2019.
Processing time and Tatkal
| Application | Time listed |
|---|---|
| Normal re-issue | VFS lists a minimum of 10 days. A minimum is not an expected delivery date |
| Tatkal | Depends on the mission and the application. HCI London currently indicates around 3 to 5 working days, subject to checks, and does not guarantee it. Appointment availability and delivery can add time |
| Lost passport | Often 6 to 8 weeks where records are available, according to VFS. Authentication can add 4 to 6 weeks and police verification can take months |
- Tatkal needs a valid passport and valid UK immigration status, and the supporting Indian ID proofs your mission specifies. The Birmingham guidance distinguishes three documents for adults and two for minors, with your last passport among the accepted documents.
- Not eligible for Tatkal on the VFS page: no valid UK visa, a passport that expired more than three years ago, SVP renewals, and changes of name, sex, date of birth, place of birth or a parent’s name.
Minors and other special cases
Renewing a child’s passport
A minor re-issue needs the existing passport, evidence of the child’s and the parents’ status, the birth certificate and the applicable annexures. Either parent may apply under the VFS guidance, but confirm attendance as above. The High Commission lists a minor passport valid for five years or until age 18. Applicants aged 15 to 18 may choose between a passport valid until 18 and a ten year passport, so do not assume the adult fee applies automatically.
First passport for a UK born child: this is a different process. It needs registration of the birth with the mission and additional first issue documents, and it is covered by the mission’s own page for newborns.
Name changes
A single combined list of documents risks making you obtain things you do not need. The High Commission’s pages distinguish these situations:
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Surname change after marriage or divorce | Follow the marital document requirements on the High Commission’s adult page. |
| Full name change | Follow the dedicated name change procedure on the High Commission site. |
| Adding or deleting a spouse’s name | This is a separate change in particulars with its own requirements. |
| Lost passport and a name change together | Ask the mission which route applies. A name change is not allowed on a lost passport application in the ordinary route. |
Expired passports
- Expired between one and three years: a letter explaining the delay.
- Expired more than three years: a notarised affidavit (London and Edinburgh) and a letter.
- Expired with no valid UK status: entry visa copy, UK address proof and proof of regularising your stay.
After renewal: update your UKVI account
After you receive your new passport, update your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Add the new passport details and check that your eVisa and travel details match before you travel. GOV.UK tells account holders to keep their passport details current, and a mismatch can cause delays at the border. The update service has restrictions where a visa decision is pending, so follow the official instructions on the GOV.UK eVisa pages and do not assume you can update immediately.
If you have become a British citizen
If you have acquired British citizenship, use the passport surrender process rather than renewal. The High Commission’s guidance says a separate citizenship renunciation application is not required for someone who has already acquired foreign citizenship, and it lists a surrender fee of £30 excluding the welfare fee and service charges. You submit the online form, a copy of your British passport and naturalisation certificate, copies of the Indian passport pages and the original Indian passport. After surrender, consider OCI if you are eligible. See the guide to applying for an OCI card from the UK.
If you are an Indian citizen in the UK thinking of moving back, see the guide to returning to Navi Mumbai and the guide to RNOR status for returning NRIs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to renew an Indian passport in the UK?
From 1 July 2026 the High Commission lists a government fee of £93 for an ordinary adult 36 page passport and £130 for a 60 page passport. Tatkal is listed at £185 and £222. These exclude the welfare fee, the VFS service charge and any delivery charge, so they are not final checkout totals.
How long does it take?
VFS lists a minimum of 10 days for a normal application. HCI London indicates around 3 to 5 working days for Tatkal, subject to checks and not guaranteed. Lost passports take much longer.
Can I apply by post or send someone else?
Postal applications are not accepted on the VFS page. Plan to attend the appointment yourself. If you need a representative, or the application is for a child, confirm the attendance requirement for your mission and category first, because official sources differ.
Which centre or mission should I use?
Confirm the mission responsible for your address, including the current Manchester and Belfast arrangements, then choose an application centre authorised for your service.
What immigration documents do I need?
The evidence your mission specifies, including a self-attested copy of your UK eVisa and share code where applicable, or the applicable indefinite leave to remain evidence. Do not rely only on an old BRP.
Can I renew a passport that expired years ago?
Yes, with a letter explaining the delay. If it expired more than three years ago you also need a notarised affidavit at London or Edinburgh.
I have become a British citizen. Can I still renew?
No. Surrender the Indian passport instead. The High Commission says a separate renunciation application is not required if you have already acquired foreign citizenship. Then consider OCI if you are eligible.
What should I do after I receive my new passport?
Update your UKVI account with the new passport details and check that your eVisa and travel details match before you travel.
