The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, or MJPJAY, is Maharashtra’s health cover for eligible families. It works together with the central Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme and pays for treatment at listed hospitals. For a family in Navi Mumbai the practical questions are whether you qualify, what to carry, how the hospital desk handles the process and how to check that a hospital and a treatment are covered before admission. This guide takes you through those steps. The senior citizen health insurance guide covers the 70 and above route for senior citizens in short, and this page owns the application and hospital-check procedure.
Scheme rules, cover amounts and hospital lists change. The figures below are as reported by news and reference sources. Confirm them on the MJPJAY portal and at the hospital before you rely on them. This guide is independent and is not run by the scheme.
What the cover is
- Cover is reported at up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year, after the scheme was revamped from 1 July 2024 and merged with PM-JAY (Business Today).
- Earlier descriptions put the cover at Rs 1.5 lakh per family per year, and some websites still quote it. The older figure is out of date.
- The same report says claims moved to direct payment by the state from 14 September 2024.
- The cover is for hospital treatment under listed packages and not for ordinary outpatient visits. Do not add the limits of different schemes together, since each scheme’s terms decide what can be used.
Who qualifies
Reports in 2024 describe the scheme as open to residents of the state who hold a valid ration card and a domicile certificate. Older descriptions limited it to families holding yellow, orange, Antyodaya or Annapurna cards and included farmers in some districts, and excluded white card holders. The rules for each ration card category have been described differently by different websites, so check your own category on the portal or at the hospital desk before you assume you qualify.
Documents to carry
- The ration card, with the family members’ names.
- A photo identity proof for each patient. Aadhaar is commonly asked for, so carry it.
- A domicile certificate, which reports mention for state residents.
- The referral or admission note from the doctor.
Document requirements differ by case, so ask the hospital’s scheme desk for its current list.
How the process works at the hospital
- Go to a hospital listed under the scheme and ask for the Arogyamitra, the scheme’s help desk worker.
- The Arogyamitra checks your eligibility and documents.
- The hospital then raises a pre-authorisation request on the portal for the treatment package.
- After approval, treatment is cashless under the package. The patient should not be asked to pay for what the package covers.
- Ask for the package name and what it includes before you start, and keep copies of the papers.
Check the hospital before you go
The scheme works only at listed hospitals, and a hospital being listed does not mean it offers every treatment. Reports mention about 1,900 listed hospitals, around 1,450 of them private. The portal has a hospital list. No list of listed Navi Mumbai hospitals is given here, because no confirmed list was available.
| Check | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Branch | Is this exact branch listed under the scheme, and for which departments? |
| Treatment | Is my planned procedure included in a scheme package? |
| Package | What does the package cover, and what is left for me to pay? |
| Room | Is a particular room category required under the package? |
| Desk | Where is the Arogyamitra desk, and what are its hours? |

Helpline and complaints
Insurer and finance websites list the helpline numbers 155388 and 1800 233 2200 for the scheme. These are not confirmed on an official page here, so check the portal. If a hospital refuses cashless treatment that the package covers, ask for the reason in writing, speak to the Arogyamitra and call the helpline, and keep every paper.
