Quick answer: to renew an Indian passport in Canada, first identify the Indian mission that serves your Canadian address. Complete the overseas Passport Seva application, then submit the printed form, your current passport and supporting documents through BLS for that jurisdiction. For an ordinary adult 36 page, 10 year reissue, the BLS Toronto fee table shows CAD 177.70 in total (CAD 176 passport fee plus CAD 1.70), before courier or optional services. Check your mission’s document list and postal instructions before you send an original passport anywhere.

This is general information. Fees, forms and timelines are set by the Indian missions and BLS International and can change without notice, so confirm them on the pages linked below before you pay. This guide is independent and is not affiliated with any Indian mission or BLS. Last checked: 7 November 2026.
Which Indian mission covers you
Canada has three Indian missions that handle passports: the High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver. Which one covers you depends on where you live, not where you want to submit. The Consulate General in Toronto publishes the split on its consular jurisdiction page.
| Mission | Covers |
|---|---|
| High Commission of India, Ottawa | The Ottawa-Hull region, Kingston, Cornwall, Hawkesbury, Arnprior, Renfrew, Perth, Prescott, Brockville, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls and Morrisburg in Ontario, and Montreal in Quebec |
| Consulate General of India, Toronto | Ontario (except postal codes starting with K, which go to Ottawa), Quebec (except postal codes starting with J, H or K, which go to Ottawa), Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland |
| Consulate General of India, Vancouver | Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories |
Use your current Canadian address and postal code. That page does not name every territory, Nunavut among them. If your address is not clearly covered, ask the High Commission in Ottawa through its consular services page before you apply.
When renewal is the right application
You can renew if you are still an Indian citizen and your passport is expiring, expired, full, damaged or lost, or its details need to change. The Toronto consulate says applicants can renew up to a year before expiry and expects renewals at least six months before expiry. Do not book travel before the new passport is in your hands. The consulate does not treat travel plans or visa and permit deadlines as an emergency.
If you have taken Canadian citizenship, renewal is no longer available. See the surrender section below.
Fees from 1 July 2026
The fee tables on the BLS pages for Toronto and Vancouver are headed “Applicable from July 1st, 2026”, and Ottawa’s shows the same adult 36 page figures. Amounts are in Canadian dollars. The last column is the total shown in the BLS Toronto table: the passport fee plus the CAD 1.70 BLS fee, before courier or optional services.
| Service | Passport fee (CAD) | BLS Toronto table total (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, 10 year passport, 36 pages (ordinary) | 176 | 177.70 |
| Adult, 10 year passport, 36 pages (Tatkal) | 349 | 350.70 |
| Adult, 10 year passport, 60 pages (ordinary) | 246 | 247.70 |
| Adult, 10 year passport, 60 pages (Tatkal) | 419 | 420.70 |
| Adult, lost or damaged passport, 36 pages (ordinary) | 349 | 350.70 |
| Minor under 18, 36 pages (ordinary) | 128 | 129.70 |
| Minor under 18, 36 pages (Tatkal) | 301 | 302.70 |
Tatkal is not open to everyone. The Toronto consulate FAQ says these cases are not eligible: lost or damaged passports, applications where the Canadian status is still pending or has expired, changes in personal particulars, and renewals of short validity passports, among others. Minors between 15 and 18 who want a 10 year passport must apply under the ordinary category. A published price does not mean you can use the service, so check before you pay. BLS also says its Vancouver and Ottawa centres do not offer Tatkal.
Fees are not refunded, and a rejected or resubmitted application means paying again. In person, BLS accepts debit card or cash. For postal applications, BLS asks for a demand draft or money order made out to BLS International Services Canada Inc. that covers the passport fee, consular fee, BLS service charges and the return courier fee if you have not paid it online. Personal cheques are not accepted, so do not assume CAD 177.70 is the right draft amount. The full tables are on the BLS pages for Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa, and the consulate lists its own passport fees.
Documents for a standard adult renewal (Toronto checklist)
This follows the Toronto consulate checklist for reissue because of expiry or full pages. Bring originals if you submit in person. Postal applications also need self-attested photocopies of the supporting documents, but copies do not replace the current passport: the checklist asks for your Indian passport in original and copy.
- Printout of the consulate checklist.
- Printout of the completed online application form.
- Current Indian passport, original and copy.
- Specimen declaration on plain paper (Annexure E).
- Proof of present Canadian address.
- Proof of your status in Canada.
- Two printed passport photographs.
- The fee.
Addresses. The consulate FAQ says the form needs one Canadian and one Indian address, each with relevant proof. Accepted proof of Indian address includes a passport, voter ID, utility bills, a government or PSU bank passbook, a landline phone bill, an Aadhaar card, a driving licence or a valid ration card. Private bank passbooks and rent agreements are not accepted for the Indian address.
Canadian address and status. The consulate FAQ accepts a driving licence, government photo ID, tax statement, rental agreement, utility bills such as internet, hydro or water, a university letter on letterhead for students living on campus, or a work or study permit or SIN document showing the address. Prepaid phone bills and bank statements are not accepted. For status, it lists a PR card, study permit, work permit or visitor record.
Permanent residents. The consulate also asks for the landing paper, or a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) that shows your immigration category. If the CoPR does not show the category, the landing paper is required as well. The consulate does not accept affidavits as documentary proof.
How to apply, step by step
- Check the mission for your postal code in the table above.
- Fill in the application on the Passport Seva portal and print it.
- Upload your photograph, signature and supporting documents online. Since 1 December 2025 the Toronto consulate has made uploading an ICAO compliant digital photograph with the requisite documents mandatory for passport applications.
- Prepare the digital photograph to the consulate’s notice: a colour image of 630 by 810 pixels on a white background. This is separate from the two printed photographs on the checklist.
- Sign inside the signature box in blue or black ink, exactly as the form asks.
- Collect the documents in the order the checklist lists them, with the application on top.
- Submit at the BLS centre for your jurisdiction, or by post. For the Toronto jurisdiction, postal applications go to BLS Brampton only, according to the consulate FAQ.
- Pay the fee, keep your receipt and track the application on the BLS tracking page for your jurisdiction.
After you submit at BLS, the page says no further changes are permitted. Errors in names or special characters mean a fresh application and a fresh fee, so read the form twice before you print it.
| Jurisdiction | Renewal checklist and fees | How to submit | Track |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Consulate checklist and BLS page | Book at BLS or walk-in rules | Track |
| Ottawa | BLS page and High Commission instructions | Book at BLS | Track |
| Vancouver | BLS page and Consulate FAQ (PDF) | Book at BLS | Track |
How long it takes
The BLS pages and the missions give different estimates. Neither is a guaranteed delivery date.
| Where | BLS estimate | Mission estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Normal 8 weeks, Tatkal 1 week | The consulate lists 20 to 21 working days for normal renewal (excluding police verification) and 3 to 4 working days for Tatkal, counted from arrival at the consulate |
| Ottawa | A minimum of 8 weeks. BLS says its Ottawa centres do not offer Tatkal | See the High Commission’s consular services page |
| Vancouver | Passports originally issued in Vancouver 2 to 4 working weeks, passports issued in India or by another mission about 2 months. BLS says its Vancouver centres do not offer Tatkal or 60 page passports and to contact the Consulate | The Consulate FAQ lists 2 weeks for normal and 2 business days for Tatkal, excluding postage and shipping |
For Vancouver, “contact the Consulate” on the BLS page means asking the Consulate for instructions. Its own FAQ says applications are accepted only through BLS. Postal applications add 3 to 4 working days at BLS, and delivery is on top. Only after the normal period has passed can you write to the nearest mission. Emergency handling is limited to the death or critical illness of a parent, child or sibling, and even then it brings forward the appointment, not the passport.
Lost, damaged, expired and other cases
- Lost passport: Annexure F, a letter explaining the loss and the original long form police report that mentions the lost passport number.
- Damaged passport: Annexure F and a declaration explaining how it was damaged. The Toronto FAQ asks for a police report only in lost cases.
- Minors: both parents’ passport copies and a no objection certificate from both parents or Annexure D are needed, and extra papers apply if only one parent is involved. Use the checklist for the exact set.
- Name or personal detail changes: marriage, divorce, name change and address change each have their own supporting documents on the BLS page.
- Passport expired for a long time: BLS lists an affidavit form for non-renewal of more than one year, while the consulate FAQ mentions a self-attested declaration on plain paper for passports expired more than three years. Ask BLS which applies to you.
After you receive the new passport
Update the passport number wherever it is on file, such as airline loyalty profiles and bank KYC records. If you hold an OCI card yourself, that is a separate process. See our e-OCI card guide.
If you have become a Canadian citizen
Indian law does not allow dual citizenship, so a new Canadian citizen cannot renew an Indian passport and needs a surrender certificate. The Toronto consulate lists the documents and steps on its surrender certificate page, and the Consulate in Vancouver has its own surrender and renunciation page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to renew an Indian passport in Canada?
From 1 July 2026 the passport fee for an ordinary adult 36 page, 10 year passport is CAD 176. The BLS Toronto table adds CAD 1.70 for a total of CAD 177.70, before courier or optional services. Tatkal is CAD 349 plus CAD 1.70, for those who are eligible.
How long does it take?
It depends on the mission and on who is quoting. BLS Toronto gives 8 weeks for normal processing, while the consulate lists 20 to 21 working days from arrival at the consulate. Ottawa is a minimum of 8 weeks at BLS, and Vancouver is 2 to 4 working weeks for passports it issued before. None of these is a guarantee.
Which Indian mission should I use?
The one that covers your postal code: Ottawa, Toronto or Vancouver. If your address is not clearly covered, contact the High Commission in Ottawa before applying.
Can I renew by post?
Yes, through BLS. Send the current Indian passport in original and copy with the application and self-attested copies of the other documents, plus a demand draft or money order. Copies alone are not enough. For the Toronto jurisdiction the package goes to BLS Brampton.
Do I need an appointment?
The consulate FAQ says applications are accepted only through BLS centres, and BLS has appointment, walk-in and postal options. Check the page for your jurisdiction before you go.
Is a digital photograph compulsory?
For Toronto, yes. The consulate made uploading an ICAO compliant photograph and the requisite documents mandatory from 1 December 2025. The photo should be 630 by 810 pixels in colour on a white background, and you still bring the printed photographs listed on the checklist.
Can I use Tatkal if my passport is lost or damaged?
No. The Toronto consulate lists lost or damaged passports as not eligible for Tatkal.
How early can I renew?
Within 12 months of expiry. The Toronto consulate expects you to renew at least six months before it expires.
Can I renew if I have become a Canadian citizen?
No. You need a surrender certificate instead.
