The photo above shows the beach at Alibag, a few kilometres away, and not Akshi Beach itself.
Akshi Beach is a quiet stretch of white sand and pine trees near Alibag in Raigad district, about 5 km from Alibag town according to the Raigad district tourism page. What sets it apart is its birdlife. The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) counted 809 shorebirds here during the Asian Waterbird Census in January 2026. This guide covers the road and ferry routes from Navi Mumbai, birdwatching, facilities to check, safety and how Akshi compares with Nagaon.
Quick answer: Akshi is a long day trip or an overnight stay from Navi Mumbai. By road the beach point is about 65 to 80 km from the stations below. By ferry you land at Mandwa and finish the trip by road through Alibag. It suits birdwatching and quiet walks more than activities.
Facilities and conditions at the beach change by season. Confirm them locally before you rely on them. This guide is independent and is not run by any resort or authority.
How to reach Akshi from Navi Mumbai
By road
Go to Panvel, join National Highway 66 and follow the road towards Alibag, then continue south of the town to Akshi. The final approach differs from the one to Alibag beach or Kihim, so follow live navigation to your stay or to the beach access point you choose. These distances run from each station to a map point on the beach, so they are not the parking area or the public entrance. They come from the OSRM routing service on OpenStreetMap data, checked on 23 October 2026. They are distances and not driving times, and weekend traffic changes the journey. Beach map point (approximate): Akshi Beach on the map.
| Starting point | Road distance to the beach map point |
|---|---|
| Panvel railway station | About 65 km (route) |
| CBD Belapur railway station | About 73 km (route) |
| Kharghar railway station | About 75 km (route) |
| Vashi railway station | About 80 km (route) |
Drivers can read the Navi Mumbai toll plazas guide. Without a car, take a bus or taxi to Alibag and then a local vehicle for the last stretch. Agree the return before you go.
By ferry
The ferry is not a shortcut from Navi Mumbai, because you first travel to a Mumbai terminal. The Navi Mumbai to Alibaug guide has the full details and schedules. In short:
- M2M Ferries names its Mumbai terminal as Ferry Wharf, Bhaucha Dhakka, and its Mandwa terminal separately. Check on the operator’s site whether the service you want carries vehicles or only passengers.
- Other services leave from the Gateway of India. Use the terminal named on your booking.
- Ferries from Mumbai arrive at Mandwa, which is on the north side of Alibag. Akshi is south of the town, so you still need a road transfer through Alibag.
- A ticket that includes a bus to Alibag does not automatically include a ride to Akshi. Ask what your ticket covers.
Birdwatching at Akshi Beach
Birdlife is Akshi’s strongest draw. The Raigad district page describes the beach as a place visited for birds and other plants and animals. The Free Press Journal reported that BNHS ran its Asian Waterbird Census at Akshi on 9 January 2026 with the Maharashtra Forest Department’s Mangrove Cell, and recorded 809 shorebirds. Species named included the Brown-headed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Sand Plover, Ruddy Turnstone and Whimbrel. The count was timed with low tide for better visibility, and the BNHS associate quoted described the beach as largely pristine, with drifted plastic as the main concern.
- What this shows: migratory shorebirds use the beach in the cooler months. It is a record of one count, so it does not promise what you will see.
- Season and tide: sightings vary with the season, the tide and the weather. Low tide exposes more of the shore, and the count above took place in January.
- Equipment: carry binoculars and watch from a distance. A long lens helps for photographs.
- Do not disturb the birds: keep to the dry sand, keep dogs and children away from resting flocks, and do not chase birds for a photograph.
- Litter: carry your rubbish back. Plastic debris is the issue the researchers flagged.
Other things to do
- Walk the beach at low tide and take photographs.
- Add a stop at Nagaon for food and water activities.
- Stay overnight in the Alibag area to avoid a hurried return.
For other coastal trips, see the Kihim Beach guide, the Kashid Beach guide and the Murud-Janjira Fort guide. The fort is a separate longer trip, so do not treat it as an easy addition to an Akshi day.
Facilities and access
The Raigad page does not list facilities at Akshi, and none has been independently verified for this guide. Use this list to check before you go.
| Facility | What to check |
|---|---|
| Parking | Where the entrance is, the charge and the walking distance to the sand. |
| Toilets and changing | Availability, public access and any charge. |
| Food and water | What is near the entrance you choose. Carry water. |
| Accessibility | Steps, uneven ground and the sand crossing. |
| Return transport | The pickup point and whether a vehicle is available later in the day. |
Best time to visit
| Purpose | What to consider |
|---|---|
| A beach visit | Heat, rain, shade and daylight. Mornings and late afternoons are cooler, and the monsoon brings rain and rougher seas. |
| Birdwatching | The cooler months, around low tide. The count above was in January, but sightings are not guaranteed. |
| Sea conditions | Check current warnings and local restrictions. INCOIS publishes ocean advisories, including high wave and swell alerts, on its website. An advisory page does not certify that swimming is safe. |
| Transport | Your return arrangements, particularly if you use the ferry. |
Swimming and safety
Do not treat calm looking water as proof that swimming is safe. Follow posted restrictions and lifeguard instructions. Lifeguard coverage at Akshi has not been verified for this guide. If conditions or supervision are uncertain, keep the visit shore based. See the NOAA rip current guidance on why calm water can still be hazardous, and keep children close and away from breaking waves.
Akshi and Nagaon compared
| Akshi | Nagaon | |
|---|---|---|
| Described as | White sand and pine trees, visited for birds and other wildlife. | Water activities and holiday accommodation, according to the Raigad district page. |
| Good for | Birdwatching and quiet walks. | A beach day with activities and food. See the Nagaon Beach guide. |
| Crowds | Vary by day, season and part of the beach. | Vary by day and season. |
The two can be considered together, since they sit on the same stretch of coast south of Alibag. This is a comparison of how each place is described and not a ranking.
