Ropeway status, checked 22 October 2026: the operator announces a maintenance closure from 21 September to 15 November 2026 (see the operator’s announcement). Confirm the reopening before you travel specifically for the ropeway, and do not assume it reopens on 16 November until the operator says so. The notice concerns ropeway operations, so check fort and walking route access separately. The official booking site being reachable does not mean the ropeway is running.
Raigad Fort is a hill fort in the Sahyadri range in Mahad taluka, Raigad district, where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned in 1674. Visitors reach the top by a ropeway or by a long climb on stone steps. From Navi Mumbai it is a full day trip with an early start. This guide gives the operator’s published fares and booking rules, the ropeway versus the climb, the route from Navi Mumbai, what to see at the top and a plan.
Fares, hours and booking terms below are the operator’s published information, and they are separate from whether the ropeway is running. This guide is independent and is not run by the ropeway operator.
Raigad Fort at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where is it? | Raigad Fort, Mahad taluka, Raigad district. The ropeway’s address is Pachad, Mahad. Pachad on the map (an approximate village point). |
| Ropeway status | Maintenance closure announced from 21 September to 15 November 2026. Confirm reopening. |
| Normal ropeway hours | 8 am to 5 pm, with a ride of about four minutes, according to the operator. These hours do not override closures. Confirm the last ascent and descent separately. |
| Ropeway or steps? | Both are used when the ropeway runs. During the closure, the climb is the only route, so decide before you leave. |
| Weather | The operator can reschedule, delay or cancel journeys for weather and technical reasons. |
Ropeway fares
These are the operator’s published fares, effective 1 April 2026, from its ticket page. They are separate from whether the ropeway is running, and online booking adds a convenience fee. The ropeway fare does not cover every monument or local charge.
| Category | Published fare |
|---|---|
| Return ticket, passengers above 9 | ₹325 |
| Return ticket, children above 3 and below 9 | ₹225 |
| Children up to 3 | Free |
| Return ticket, senior citizens (60 and above) | ₹225 |
| One-way ticket, common for all | ₹225 |
| Return ticket, adult group above 25 people | ₹300 per person |
The operator’s page says travel is free for physically disabled visitors on the one-way ticket, and it asks for age proof and photo identification for the senior concession. The page’s wording leaves the exact age 9 boundary unclear, so confirm which category applies to a child near that age. The operator also publishes school trip rates.
Booking and cancellation terms
- Book through the operator’s official booking site. The closure notice above applies to any booking.
- No customer cancellation is allowed. Rescheduling is allowed up to 24 hours before the journey date.
- Online tickets do not give priority boarding, and entry is not allowed before your allotted zone.
- Zone timings can change with weather, crowds and technical stoppages.
- Separate refund provisions apply when the operator is responsible for a cancellation, and a 50% refund applies in one stated case of a technical stoppage after one leg of a return ticket.
Online booking adds a convenience fee, and its amount is shown in the booking flow.
Ropeway or walk?
| Ropeway (when running) | Climb on the steps | |
|---|---|---|
| Effort | Avoids the main ascent, but sightseeing still involves walking, steps and uneven historic surfaces. | A long, steep climb, often in the sun, then the same walking at the top |
| Time | A short ride of about four minutes, plus a boarding wait that online booking does not remove, then your fort visit | Several hours up and down for many people, plus your fort visit |
| Cost | A ticket, return or one way | No ropeway fare |
| Risk | Operations can stop for weather or technical reasons | Wet steps are slippery, and heat and daylight matter |
Queues can be long on busy days. Visitors with mobility limitations should confirm boarding assistance and access arrangements before travelling. The operator mentions a paid doli service on special request, which is not the same as confirmed wheelchair access or availability during maintenance.
Planning the climb
- Start from the Pachad side, as the steps and the ropeway both begin there, and check the current access rules for the walking route.
- Expect a steep ascent and a similar descent, so confirm you can complete the descent without relying on the ropeway.
- Allow extra time for walking on the plateau once you arrive.
- Check the weather and the daylight, since wet steps are slippery and the fort is exposed.
- During the closure, choose the climb or another day before you leave. Do not treat walking as a fallback after you arrive expecting the ropeway.
What to see
Raigad was the capital of Shivaji Maharaj’s kingdom. The district tourism information names the Jagdishwar Temple and Shivaji Maharaj’s samadhi among the sights at the top. Raigad is also one of the components of the Maratha Military Landscapes of India, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2025 (UNESCO World Heritage Centre). The listing concerns the fort landscape, and the ropeway itself is not the listed attraction. Allow time to walk the plateau and see these landmarks, and carry water and a cap.
Getting there from Navi Mumbai
The operator’s directions take the Mumbai-Goa highway through Panvel to Mahad and then follow the signs to Raigad, with the ropeway at Pachad. These are road distances from each station to a Pachad village point, which is approximate, and the lower station and the start of the steps are both near it. They are from OpenStreetMap and the OSRM routing service, checked on 23 October 2026, and they are distances and not travel times. The operator’s own figures are broader, so use a live map for the exact base.
| Starting point | Road distance to Pachad |
|---|---|
| Panvel railway station | About 123 km (route) |
| CBD Belapur railway station | About 132 km (route) |
| Kharghar railway station | About 133 km (route) |
| Vashi railway station | About 139 km (route) |
| Airoli railway station | About 151 km (route) |
| Mode | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Taxi or car | The correct destination pin (the ropeway base at Pachad or the start of the steps), the route and your return arrangement. |
| Train | The operator names Vir-Dasgaon on the Konkan line as a rail approach, followed by road travel through Mahad. Check current train stops and the onward transfer. |
| Bus | A verified service to the relevant town, then a confirmed onward connection. No bus times are given here. |
See the Panvel railway station guide for the Panvel base and the Navi Mumbai toll plazas guide for drivers.
A planning sequence

- Navigate to the correct base at Pachad.
- Allow separate time for boarding, the ascent and the sightseeing, and treat any duration as an estimate.
