Matheran is a doable day trip from Navi Mumbai, but the car park is not the town. No motor vehicle goes into Matheran, so you leave your car at Dasturi Naka, or take a train to Neral, and then walk, ride or use local transport for the rest. This guide compares the routes from Navi Mumbai, explains the arrival points and gives a one-day plan with map-checked walking distances.
Train services, fees and rates change, and several of them have no official published tariff. Where a figure could not be confirmed, the guide says so. It is an independent guide and is not run by any transport operator.
Matheran from Navi Mumbai: quick answers
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How far is it by road? | About 48 to 66 km to the Dasturi car park, depending on where in Navi Mumbai you start. Plan the whole day, not the drive: parking, the onward leg and the walk into town all add time. |

| Nearest railway station | Neral, about 20 km from Matheran on the toy train line. From Neral you take the toy train, when it is running, or a taxi to Dasturi Naka. |
| Toy train | Status is uncertain after the monsoon suspension that ran to 15 October. See the dated status box below. |

Which way to go

| Overnight stay | Seeing the viewpoints at sunrise and sunset | Booking ahead in peak season, as the tourism page advises |
By road from Navi Mumbai
These are map distances, checked on 21 October 2026 with the OSRM routing service on OpenStreetMap data, from the map point for each station to the map point for Neral station and for the Dasturi car park. Use the route links to see each one. They are not driving times: weekend traffic, the hill approach and parking will decide how long your own trip takes.
| Starting point | To Neral station | To Dasturi car park |
|---|---|---|
| Panvel | About 42 km (route) | About 48 km (route) |
| Kharghar | About 50 km (route) | About 56 km (route) |

By train from Navi Mumbai
Neral is on the Kalyan to Karjat section of Central Railway, two stations before Karjat, according to its Wikipedia entry. From Navi Mumbai the working rail route is a Trans-Harbour train to Thane, then a Central line local towards Karjat. Look up your train in the Central Railway timetable or the National Train Enquiry System to confirm that it stops at Neral. The Mumbai local train guide covers tickets, ladies compartments and how the interchange at Thane works. Karjat is also the gateway to the Kondana Caves, a short trek away.
From Panvel, take the Trans-Harbour line to Thane and change there. The Panvel railway station guide shows the Harbour and Trans-Harbour connections. A direct Panvel to Karjat suburban line is still being built and has no confirmed opening date, so do not plan around it.
The toy train and the shuttle
Toy train status, checked 21 October 2026: Central Railway’s notice suspended regular Neral to Aman Lodge service from 15 June to 15 October. A press report expected the full Neral to Matheran service to resume on 20 October. Central Railway’s own latest announcement is the reliable source on whether it has, so confirm it before you plan around the train.
| Service | What to understand |
|---|---|
| Neral to Matheran (full hill railway) | The full journey of about 21 km, roughly two hours up. If it is not running, plan the Neral to Dasturi leg by taxi instead. |
| Aman Lodge to Matheran (shuttle) | A short hop near the hilltop that Central Railway ran through the monsoon suspension. It does not replace the climb from Neral. Aman Lodge is a 0.7 km walk from the Dasturi car park. |
The Matheran Hill Railway opened in the early 1900s, according to Wikipedia. A taxi from Neral is the fallback when the full train is not running. Ask for the fare before you set off, and agree whether it is per seat or per vehicle.
Arriving: Neral, Dasturi, Aman Lodge and town
Rail distance, road distance and walking distance are different things. Neral is about 20 km from Matheran on the toy train line, but the road from Neral to the car park is about 8 km, and the walk from the car park to town is another 2.8 km. The figures below are map estimates checked on 21 October 2026, using OpenStreetMap routing.
| Arrival point | What you do next | Distance and walking time |
|---|---|---|
| Neral station | Find onward transport outside the station: a taxi to Dasturi, or the toy train platform when the full service runs. | About 8 km by road to Dasturi (route) |
| Dasturi car park (map pin) | Park here. This is where the walk, local ride or shuttle starts. | Aman Lodge station 0.7 km, about 9 min on foot (route). Matheran railway station 2.8 km, about 37 min (route) |
| Aman Lodge station | Take the shuttle to Matheran when it runs, or walk. | About 2.0 km to Matheran station, about 27 min on foot (route) |
| Matheran town (railway station) | Start your viewpoint walk from here. | See the walking legs in the plan below |
| Return journey | Head back in good time. Local transport is limited, so allow for queues, and walk back to Dasturi well before dusk if you came on foot. | Allow about 40 minutes on foot from town to Dasturi |
Getting around Matheran
Private vehicles are restricted to Dasturi Naka, but local transport is a separate matter. The tourism department still lists walking, horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. A Supreme Court order, reported by ThePrint, ended hand-pulled carts and told the state to replace them with e-rickshaws. Free Press Journal reported in February 2026 that only 20 e-rickshaws had been allotted against 40 approved, and that drivers had gone on strike. So e-rickshaws exist but in limited numbers, and their rates and routes are not published. Do not count on one being available, and do not expect one to reach each viewpoint. Walking and horses remain the dependable options.
Viewpoints and sights
| Point | What the tourism department says |
|---|---|
| Louisa Point | Views of Prabal Fort, Vishalgad and the valleys, best at sunrise or sunset |
| Panorama Point | Also called Sunrise Point, with a 360 degree view |
| Echo Point | A natural echo and cliff views, good with children |
| One Tree Hill Point | A trek through rocky ground to a view over deep valleys |
| Alexander Point | A quieter spot over Palasdari Lake and the villages of Karjat and Borgaon |
| Charlotte Lake | The town’s main water source, fullest in the monsoon, with the Pisarnath Temple nearby |
| Monkey Point | Views of gorges, with monkeys that snatch food, so keep snacks out of sight |
Prabal Fort is described as a moderately difficult trek and is not a sensible add-on to a day trip. For other treks around the city, see the winter treks guide and the monsoon treks guide.
A one day plan from Navi Mumbai
Walking legs below are map estimates from Matheran railway station, not timed on the ground, and exclude stops. Add the Dasturi leg first: 2.8 km each way on foot, or the shuttle or a local ride if they are running.
Compact route, about 4.4 km of walking
- Matheran station to Charlotte Lake: 1.9 km, about 25 min (route).
- Charlotte Lake to Echo Point: 1.0 km, about 14 min.
- Echo Point back to the station: 1.5 km, about 21 min.
- Allow lunch in town. The tourism department names vada pav, misal pav and chikki as local favourites.
Longer route, about 5.9 km of walking
- Matheran station to Echo Point: 1.5 km, about 21 min (route).
- Echo Point to Louisa Point: 1.7 km, about 23 min.
- Louisa Point back to the station: 2.7 km, about 35 min.
Shorter option for families
Walk to Echo Point and back: 1.5 km each way, about 40 minutes of walking in total. Add Charlotte Lake only if the children still have energy.
Optional extras
Panorama Point is 4.7 km on foot from the station (about 69 min each way), but only 1.9 km from the Dasturi car park (about 32 min). Treat it as a separate sunrise outing, not part of the town circuit. Alexander Point is 1.7 km from the station. Prabal Fort and One Tree Hill are longer treks.
Fix a turnaround time before you start. If you are walking the 2.8 km between Dasturi and town, leave town by about 3:00 pm so you reach the car park before dusk. If the day feels rushed, stay overnight and book ahead in peak season. For other trips, see the weekend getaways guide, the day outings guide and the Lonavala guide.
