Nearest Railway Station to Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI)

Transport & Commute

Quick answer: Targhar has the shortest recorded road transfer to Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI) among the stations compared here. It is on the Nerul and Belapur to Uran line and opened for suburban passenger services in December 2025. Check the current stopping pattern and service notices for your travel date. Panvel is the main rail hub, with Harbour line, Trans-Harbour line and long-distance trains, but it is much further by road. No train or metro runs into the terminal, so every rail journey ends with a bus, cab or auto.

This guide helps you pick a station, shows example routes from Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Panvel, and explains how to plan the last stretch to the terminal. To compare all the ways of reaching the airport, including driving and cabs, see our guide to reaching the airport.

Panvel Harbour, Trans-Harbour and long-distance rail About 16.7 to 18.8 km Listed on the airport’s transport page; recent reporting describes further Panvel links as planned The main rail hub for long-distance trains.
Nerul and CBD Belapur Harbour, Trans-Harbour and Uran line Not measured for this guide Both listed on the airport’s transport page Where Uran line trains start, so a common change point.

These are Google Maps driving-route estimates recorded on 27 September 2026, from station map pins to NMIA Passenger Terminal 1. They are not walking distances and exclude station exit time, waiting for transport and terminal access. Confirm the exact pickup and passenger drop-off points before travelling. The table is a selection, not a full list. The airport’s bus page also lists Khandeshwar station.

The airport’s transport page still uses “expected to be” when naming Panvel and Targhar as the nearest suburban stations. Separate railway reporting documents Targhar’s opening.

Targhar

Central Railway added five pairs of trains on the Belapur and Nerul to Uran corridor from 15 December 2025 and brought Targhar and Gavan stations into use the same day, taking daily Uran line services from 40 to 50, as PTI reported and Swarajya confirmed. Targhar opened for suburban passenger services in December 2025. Check the current stopping pattern and service notices for your travel date.

Reports before the opening described a large concourse, a drop-off area and walkways to the airport as planned. Check at the station what is available on the day.

Example routes to Targhar by train

Uran line trains start at Nerul, CBD Belapur and Uran, according to PTI and the Port line route listing. From outside the Uran corridor, a common rail route involves changing at Nerul or CBD Belapur. If you are already on the corridor, check for a train stopping at Targhar in the direction you need.

If you start from Example route Change at
Nerul or CBD Belapur A Uran line train towards Uran that stops at Targhar No change needed
A station on the Uran corridor, such as Bamandongri, Kharkopar or Uran A Belapur or Nerul bound train that stops at Targhar No change needed if a train stops at Targhar in your direction
Mumbai CSMT, Wadala or Kurla A Harbour line train towards Panvel, as per the Harbour line route Nerul or CBD Belapur, then a Uran-bound service stopping at Targhar
Dadar Dadar Central, a train stopping at Kurla, then a Harbour line train towards Panvel Nerul or CBD Belapur, then a Uran-bound service stopping at Targhar
Thane A Trans-Harbour line train towards Nerul, Belapur or Panvel, as per the Trans-Harbour route Nerul or CBD Belapur, then a Uran-bound service stopping at Targhar
Vashi, Sanpada or Juinagar A Harbour line train towards Panvel Nerul or CBD Belapur, then a Uran-bound service stopping at Targhar
Kharghar or Panvel A train towards Belapur or Nerul, or a bus or cab straight to the airport Nerul or CBD Belapur, then a Uran-bound service stopping at Targhar

These are example routes, not a promise of a train in your direction at your time. Going from Dadar via CSMT instead of Kurla adds travel, so compare both before choosing. Confirm current services for your date before travelling. Platform numbers are left out because they can change.

Plan around train times, not around one timetable

  • Use Central Railway’s current timetable and notices for the Uran line. Timetables get revised.
  • A departure time from Nerul, Belapur or Uran is not your arrival time at Targhar. Add the running time to your station.
  • Check for weekend engineering blocks and temporary notices on your travel date.
  • Work backwards from the airline’s reporting deadline, using a train you have confirmed.

Use this worksheet for the whole journey:

Total journey time = travel to your departure station + waiting for the train + rail travel + interchange time + station exit + waiting for onward transport + road transfer + terminal access.

Add the airline’s required reporting time and a contingency separately. A short map driving estimate is not a station to check-in time. If you carry large bags, use a mobility aid or travel with children, check the particular station, interchange and route in advance. This guide does not confirm step-free access at any station.

From the station to the terminal

No train or metro enters the terminal. The airport’s transport page says NMMT buses connect the airport with Kharkopar, Targhar, Belapur, Nerul, Khandeshwar and Panvel stations. Treat that as published connection information, not a confirmed departure. Before you rely on a bus, establish:

  • Which station exit leads to the bus stop, and where the stop actually is.
  • The direction of travel and the next departure, including the operating window.
  • The fare and the payment methods accepted.
  • Luggage and accessibility arrangements.
  • What you will do if the connection does not run. NMMT’s current information is on its NMMC page, and our NMMT bus guide covers the network.

Check whether a cab or auto can collect you from the station at your arrival time. Taxi and auto services at the airport do not show that vehicles will be waiting at a station. Open your cab app before you leave the platform and check the pickup point. If someone is driving you, see our airport parking guide.

Panvel: when it makes sense

Consider Panvel if your long-distance train actually stops there, or if your starting point makes it the convenient station. It is on the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines, and the airport calls it a major hub for national rail services. It is further from the terminal than Targhar, so allow more road time. The airport lists Panvel among the stations NMMT buses connect, while recent coverage describes further Panvel links as planned. Arrange a confirmed alternative if you cannot verify the bus service.

Metro and planned links

Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 runs between CBD Belapur and Pendhar and does not reach the airport. Metro Line 8 and a Khandeshwar to airport extension are planned airport links, described as proposed in Business Today in October 2026. They are not available journey options today. See our Navi Mumbai Metro guide for stations, fares and project history.

Before you leave

  • Check which Mumbai airport your ticket uses. Flights have been moving between the two airports, and our airport comparison explains how to tell.
  • Confirm the current train timetable and notices for your date.
  • Check the NMMT bus or cab pickup at the station you chose.
  • If you are connecting between the two airports, see our airport transfer guide.
  • For local train basics, see our Mumbai local train guide.

Can I use the train for an early-morning or late-night flight?

Work backwards from the airline’s reporting deadline. Add terminal access, the road transfer, the wait for onward transport, the rail journey and any interchange, using a train time you have confirmed on Central Railway’s current timetable or notices. Add a contingency, and arrange a confirmed alternative, such as a booked cab, if the last connection is uncertain.

Not yet. Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 runs between CBD Belapur and Pendhar and does not reach the airport. Metro Line 8 and a Khandeshwar to airport extension are planned, and neither is available today.
