Quick answer: Look at the airport code on your booking. NMI is Navi Mumbai International Airport, the new one, and BOM is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the older Mumbai airport. As of 7 October 2026, the airlines and routes at each airport are changing, so what matters is the airport on your own booking. One dated example: Air India Express began flying between NMI and Abu Dhabi on 15 July 2026. That is an example, not a full list of international flights from NMI. Check your airline and the airport’s flight status page for the flight you are booking.
Mumbai now has two airports, and many travellers, especially those flying in from abroad, find out which one their flight uses only when they open the ticket. This guide explains how to tell, what each airport offers today and what a safe transfer between them involves. Airline schedules are changing quickly. Last verified: 7 October 2026.
How to tell which airport your flight uses
- Find the three letter code next to the airport name on your booking. NMI means Navi Mumbai. BOM means Mumbai, the older airport.
- Check the departure or arrival code on the airline’s own app, not only a travel site. Press reports on 1 October 2026 urged passengers to recheck whether their code was BOM or NMI.
- Do not assume a flight that used one airport last month still does. Airlines are moving flights in phases.
NMI and BOM side by side
| Question | NMI (Navi Mumbai) | BOM (Mumbai) |
|---|---|---|
| Airport code | NMI | BOM |
| Terminal on your booking | Terminal 1 is the only passenger terminal | Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, so check which one your airline uses |
| Is your flight available there? | Check the airline and the airport’s flight status. Airlines and routes are being added | Check the same way, for your airline, route and date |
| Access to your destination | Compare the road route from your exact terminal at your travel time | Compare the road route from your exact terminal at your travel time |
| If you connect between airports | Needs a long buffer and the airline’s protection for the itinerary | Needs a long buffer and the airline’s protection for the itinerary |

Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI) at a glance
Navi Mumbai International Airport opened to passengers on 25 December 2025 and has one passenger terminal, Terminal 1. It is the airport the Navi Mumbai International Airport guide covers in detail. For passengers arriving from abroad, the Ministry of Home Affairs notified it as an authorised immigration post in a gazette notification reported on 29 June 2026, and the official arrival guide describes an arrival immigration hall, customs green and red channels and the ATITHI app. Confirm the airport’s passenger operating hours with the airport before you travel.
The airport’s official airline information page lists Air India Express (domestic and international), IndiGo (domestic) and Akasa Air (domestic). The page has a Load More button, so the list may be longer than the airlines named here. FLY91 began flying from NMI in early October 2026, according to reports. For airlines and routes in more depth, see our Navi Mumbai airport flights guide.
International flights: dated examples, not a full list
- Abu Dhabi: Air India Express began flights between NMI and Abu Dhabi on 15 July 2026, according to an airline press release and trade reports. Check with the airline that the route runs on your dates.
- International cargo: Air India’s newsroom records the first international export shipment from NMI on 15 July 2026, on an Air India Express flight to Abu Dhabi.
- Other routes: the sources cited here do not list other scheduled international passenger flights from NMI. Use your airline’s booking page and the airport’s flight status service to check for others.
Announced changes are not bookable flights
Reports in early October 2026 described a proposal to move some international departures from Mumbai’s airport to NMI from late October, and on 6 October reports said the Civil Aviation Ministry had asked for it to be deferred. Keep three things apart: what has been announced, what you can actually book, and which airport appears on your current booking. Only the last one decides where you go. Flight counts are not given here because they go stale within days.
Choosing between the airports for a trip
There is no blanket rule such as “South Mumbai means BOM” or “Navi Mumbai means NMI”. Compare the journey you will actually make:
- Destination: the exact address, not the neighbourhood.
- Terminal: BOM’s Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are different starting points, and NMI has one terminal.
- Road route: open a map for each airport at your arrival time. Distance and travel time are different things, and time varies with traffic and the route over Atal Setu or other roads. Our Atal Setu guide covers the toll route.
- Flight availability: which airlines and times exist at each airport on your date.
- Total cost: the fare, the airport fee in it and the cost of the road transfer.
Airport fees on the ticket
Airport user development fees are collected through your ticket, and they are one component of the fare, not a reason to choose one airport or a complete price. For NMI, the regulator’s order for 1 June 2026 to 31 March 2027, as reported by Business Standard, Businessworld and Outlook Money, sets these fees. The airport’s published tariff document carries the conditions and exemptions, so check it for your case:
| Passenger movement | Domestic | International |
|---|---|---|
| Embarking | Rs 620 | Rs 1,225 |
| Disembarking | Rs 270 | Rs 525 |
A comparison with Mumbai’s figures needs the matching tariff period for BOM. Look at the fee line in your fare breakup.
If you connect between the airports
A shuttle, or a nominal driving time, does not make a safe connection. If your itinerary involves both airports, check each step with your airline before you book:
- Whether the airline protects the connection and will rebook you if you miss it.
- Immigration and baggage collection at the first airport, and customs where they apply.
- Exit from the terminal and where your pickup waits.
- The road transfer, at the time of day you will make it.
- The next airline’s check-in and baggage drop deadlines.
- Security screening at the second airport.
Adani’s release of 5 October 2026 announced a free hourly shuttle between the two airports, to be run by Cityflo, Aarya and Chalo. Treat it as an announcement until you see operating details and timings from the operator.
Getting to and from NMI
NMI’s official transport page lists app cabs (Uber, Ola, Rapido, Alyte, Allmiles and Aero link), car rental (WTI Cabs and First Cars), NMMT buses to Kharkopar, Targhar, Belapur, Nerul, Khandeshwar and Panvel stations, and Chalo Bus services to Andheri, Bandra, Dadar, Thane and Colaba. It calls Panvel and Targhar the expected nearest railway stations. No metro or train runs to the terminal. Our how to reach Navi Mumbai airport guide has the details by starting area, and our parking guide covers driving.
Adani’s 5 October release also announced MSRTC e-Shivai services from 7 October, with fares of Rs 450 to Pune, Rs 210 to Borivali and Rs 170 to Dadar East. Describe those as announced services and check the operator for current timings.
